uPVC Windows are proven. Available across Europe and America for the past 60 years, uPVC window profiles are today the most popular choice to deliver superior performance: worldwide, uPVC windows accounted for 55% of all new and replacement residential windows. That was almost 290 million window units in 2012, chosen for their durability, low maintenance, high energy efficiency performance and style. Here’s our five reasons why uPVC windows are the best choice:
- A CONVINCING LONG LIFE CYCLE
uPVC windows are considered durable with expected life spans of 35 years. They are UV resistant and leading brands have been tested specifically for Australian weather resistance. They are also resistant to salt air making them ideal for coastal locations. Life cycle assessments have shown that wood and uPVC windows perform similarly from an environmental perspective over their life-times, and have lower environmental footprints than aluminium.
- HIGH PERFORMANCE THERMAL INSULATION
Thermal performance is one of the most important characteristics of a window. This is the ability of a window system to avoid heat exchange between the inside and outside environments, and is defined by two values:
- a) U-value, the overall heat transfer coefficient, which describe how well the window conducts heat (the lower the U value the better the thermal insulation) and
- b) SHGC, or Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, which represents the percentage of solar radiation to go through the window.
Timber and uPVC framed windows usually show very similar, high standards of thermal performance as neither material conducts temperature well, and both are considerably more efficient than aluminium. Double glazed PVC windows can be as much as 4.5 times more energy efficient than standard single glazed aluminium
THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF DIFFERENT FRAME MATERIALS (UW VALUE) (CALCULATED ACCORDING TO DIN EN 10077-2)
MATERIAL Uw value
Hardwood Windows 1.9 W/m2K
Aluminium without thermal break 6.6 W/m2K
Aluminium with thermal break (polyamid 25 mm 2.2 W/m2K
uPVC Window 1.9-1.3 W/m2K
- STYLES TO SUIT EVERYONE
uPVC window profiles have been carefully engineered to provide high performance, highly secure, quality windows with easy to operate hardware and superior weather seals. They can be used to fabricate windows in a wide range of styles for old and new, heritage or contemporary homes. And they come in a variety of colours.
- CUTTING OUT THE NOISE
The multiple chambered profile of uPVC together with the low conductivity of PVC material and superior weather seals, means double-glazed uPVC windows are excellent noise barriers. They are proven to reduce noise by 33-45 dB improving the comfort of homes, hospitals, schools and offices, particularly in busy urban environments.
- A RECYCLABLE MATERIAL
PVC is a recyclable thermoplastic and recycling facilities exist in Australia for the material. In Europe, almost 200,000 tonnes of uPVC window profiles and related products were recycled in 2013, demonstrating that uPVC windows and doors can be readily recovered at end-of-life and recycled. Although uPVC windows have not been in use long enough in Australia to generate much end-of- life waste, offcuts from fabrication of uPVC windows in Australia are already being collected and recycled into new products.
